THE BADGE OF ENDURANCE

independent one –

legs straddled

over the fence

in great discomfort.

a calloused hangover

in blue collar drudgery –

results of the years

in an unsure path.

it’s like pouring

hot water

over a thick

sheet of glass –

surface hot, but the center cold –

end result … cracks throughout.

if you ran your fingers

across the lines,

remember

that my eyes are here,

experiences can have all kinds of cracks

when vision is blurred.

your fingers of touch

are a mending soother.

life is never a definitive path

handed to you.

that silver platter

has to have the right engravings

even after 25 years.

can you sense this badge of endurance?

    • i hear you sheila. for me blue collar life hasn’t fullfilled anything. it pays the bills and thats it. i want something that makes me happy when i get up in the morning. but this lifestyle fuels my writing – a new path:))

  1. Don, this is brilliant–I especially like

    f you ran your fingers

    Exquisite.

    • thanx for your wonderful comment soraya. i worked on that piece all morning because it needed to be written. it’s great to hear that it was poignant too. i’m glad that it moved you:)

    • thanx naima for your wonderful comment. i’m not sure if you know what blue collar refers to. that could be a winded explanation. and yes, a number of my pieces do end with a question. again thanx for coming around:)
